Two-step verification and backup codes

Setting up an authenticator app, and what the backup codes are for.

Two-step verification asks for a six-digit code from an authenticator app, in addition to your password. To set it up, go to Settings → Account → Security & devices. You will see a QR code to scan with your authenticator app, and you confirm one code from the app before it is switched on. You are then shown eight recovery codes. Save them somewhere safe. Each one works once, and they are the way back into your account if you lose the device with your authenticator app. You can generate a fresh set at any time from the same screen, which replaces the old ones. When signing in, you can enter either a code from your app or one of your recovery codes. If you have lost your authenticator app and your recovery codes, you cannot reset this yourself. Open Help & Support and ask there — an Orrery administrator can clear two-step verification for your account.
1. Two-step verification lives under Settings, in the Account section.
2. Two-factor auth is its own block in Account settings. Enable two-factor starts the setup.

Still stuck?

If none of these answer your question, there are two ways to reach a person.

  • If you can sign in: open Orrery, then choose Help & Support and press Contact support. Your request goes to the Support Center, where you can read the reply and follow it up.
  • If you cannot sign in: email [email protected]. A person reads it. Please describe what happens and what you were trying to do — and never include your password: nobody at Orrery will ever ask you for it.
