Alternate identities

Keeping separate worlds under one login, and how separate they really are.

An alternate identity is a completely separate presence in Orrery that you reach with the same login. It has its own name, its own @handle, its own orbit, its own posts and its own messages. To find them: from your main Orrery screen select your own planet in the centre (on a phone, tap Me), choose Profile, and scroll to Identities. Each identity has a Switch button, and + New identity creates one. How separate they are. To another member, an alternate identity is indistinguishable from any other account. The two are not shown as related anywhere, they do not share contacts, and nothing in Orrery tells another member that one is connected to the other. The one exception is Orrery's own administrators, who can see that the identities belong to the same login — that record exists so abuse can be dealt with, and it is not visible to anybody else. Some things worth knowing: - You switch between identities; you are only ever acting as one at a time, and a banner tells you which. - An alternate identity cannot be signed into directly. Your main password and two-step verification protect all of them. - Creating one does not notify anybody. - Deleting an alternate identity deletes only that identity and returns you to your main one. Deleting your main account removes the alternate ones with it. How many you can have. Alternate identities draw on the same small allowance as extra @handles, and on an ordinary account today that allowance is zero — so + New identity is not shown, and the section says instead that alternate identities are included with Orrery+. There is nothing to buy: no paid plan exists yet. If your account has been given the extra allowance, the button appears, and it disappears again once you have used it up.
1. Start on the main Orrery screen and select your own planet in the centre.
2. Your profile opens on a row of tabs. Choose Profile.
3. Scroll the Profile tab to Identities. Each identity has a Switch button; a new one is created here when your account has the allowance.

Still stuck?

If none of these answer your question, there are two ways to reach a person.

  • If you can sign in: open Orrery, then choose Help & Support and press Contact support. Your request goes to the Support Center, where you can read the reply and follow it up.
  • If you cannot sign in: email [email protected]. A person reads it. Please describe what happens and what you were trying to do — and never include your password: nobody at Orrery will ever ask you for it.
